The babies may or may not love his mother. What is the reason for adopting this contradictory attitude?
For the first one, it is natural for a human being to become familiar with the environment, animals and even the non-living things. It is difficult to leave that place. Then why shouldn't he have a love for his mother? Of course, there is some familiarity & love, that can be seen in this photograph.
But on the other side, it is not surprising that the child is selfish. He wants his desired fulfilled. Numerous examples can be taken from practical life which is clear proof that the child is selfish. Here are a few examples of his selfishness. He doesn't care that her mother is hungry, but he needs sweets for herself after taking a meal. He has no interest in it whether the mother is tired but he needs immediate fulfilment of his needs.
In short, the child is selfish but at the same time, he becomes accustomed to the environment around him. When the child grows socially & he receives constant love, he tries to balance his needs (desires) and love.
To further elaborate this point here's something from educational psychology.
There are two kinds of behaviour, biological behaviour and bio-social behaviour. In the very beginning child's behaviour is biological but with the elapse of time he learns the bio-social behaviour and importance of companion, that lead to him to socialization, ultimately he knows to love and sacrifice for others especially for his mother.
